Bleeding Gums

Bleeding gums

The concept behind bleeding gums is simple. For some reason, the soft tissues which hold your teeth in place are bleeding on a regular basis. This is not normal but is a surprisingly common complaint in Ottawa.

It is normal to be concerned when you brush your teeth and see blood mixed with toothpaste. At Alberta Sample Dentistry, we can help you address this condition and improve oral health and wellness.

The Causes

There are numerous reasons why your gums might be bleeding. Our goal at Alberta Sample Dentistry is to make a diagnosis so we can treat the underlying problem causing the symptom of bleeding gums. This is achieved by examining your teeth and soft tissues, asking questions about your regular habits, and basic deduction.

Some of the reasons why you might be experiencing this issue include:

  • A buildup of plaque around the teeth and on the gums
  • Brushing too hard with a firm toothbrush
  • Ill-fitting dental appliances (like dentures)
  • A dental infection
  • Hormonal changes
  • Improper flossing
  • A medical bleeding disorder
  • A disease like leukemia or scurvy
  • Using blood thinners

The treatment we offer will vary based on the cause of your problem. In general, our office recommends switching to a soft electric toothbrush to eliminate plaque better and prevent you from brushing too hard. If you are struggling with flossing, we can show you the proper way to reach between the teeth and eliminate plaque.

If you have an infection of one of your teeth or gums, we can perform a root canal, eliminate the buildup of bacteria, or prescribe antibiotics. Ill-fitting dental appliances can be resized and replaced to improve your comfort.

If your bleeding gums are caused by a medical condition, we will refer you to a physician for further treatment.

If you have any questions about bleeding gums or would like to schedule an appointment, you can contact us online or by phone. We are currently accepting new patients and will be glad to see you!
