Dental Anxiety

Dental Anxiety

Dental anxiety is a common phenomenon in Canada. In fact, modern research indicates around 50 to 80 percent of adults possess some form of stress or anxiety when it comes to visiting the dentist, even if it is for routine treatment.

At Albert Street Dentistry in Ottawa, we want all of our patients to be able to receive the treatment they need regardless of their fears. If you experience anxiety when going to the dentist, our office is equipped with a broad range of methods and distractions designed to soothe your nerves. Depending on the severity of your response, we even offer sedation dentistry.

General Solutions

The answer to dental anxiety does not need to be medication. If you have low to moderate distress when visiting the dentist, you will discover that our office is equipped to take your mind off of treatment. We currently have audio and video entertainment in the waiting and treatment rooms so you can listen to music or watch movies while getting your teeth examined and cleaned.

If you need this type of solution to help combat anxiety, you do not need to tell us when making your appointment. You can instead schedule a regular one and visit like normal.

Sedation Dentistry

We care about our patients, and this means offering state of the art treatment. Sedation dentistry has been around for decades but recently started to be used to combat anxiety instead of only lessening pain.

Through sedation dentistry, our dentist utilizes laughing gas and oral or intravenous sedation. These medications are designed to reduce tension and instill the user with a feeling of happiness. In some cases, the strength of the oral or intravenous sedation is enough to bring you to the edge of consciousness so that you are completely unaware of the treatment.

If you need sedation dentistry to treat your dental anxiety, we recommend mentioning it when you schedule your appointment. This way, our office staff can prep the equipment and ensure there are no interactions between the sedation and medications you might be taking.
