Missing Tooth/Teeth

Missing tooth/teeth

Did you know that the vast majority of adults are missing at least one permanent tooth? It is a common problem that can occur for numerous reasons, including poor oral hygiene and physical injury. In fact, most people over the age of 55 have actually lost at least 12 permanent teeth, resulting in the need for dental appliances like dentures and bridges to keep the smile functional.

Causes of Missing Teeth

Losing a tooth can be embarrassing for individuals of all ages. Society tends to associate missing teeth with poor oral hygiene, such as not brushing the teeth on a regular basis. While this is one of the most common reasons for a tooth to fall out, it is not the only one. In fact, some of the most frequently seen reasons for missing teeth include the following:

  • Trauma affecting the jaw
  • Poor dental hygiene
  • Overcrowding
  • A thinning jawbone
  • Severe overbite or underbite

In many of these scenarios, a tooth was lost because the teeth were unable to sit properly in the mouth.

Consequences of Missing Teeth

Although losing a single permanent tooth does not seem like a major problem, it can actually create long-lasting issues when it comes to your oral health and wellness. Some consequences of failing to address the problem include:

  • Overeruption of the opposing teeth
  • Drifting of the posterior teeth
  • Loss of posterior occlusion
  • Splaying of the anterior teeth

Treatment

At Alberta Street Dentistry in Ottawa, we offer several significant forms of treatment to replace missing teeth and prevent future problems. The most common is the insertion of a dental implant.

A dental implant consists of two pieces: a titanium root and a synthetic crown. The root is inserted through the gums and directly into the jawbone, which heals around the metal. The crown is then screwed on top of the root to form a complete tooth.

Implants stop the teeth from shifting out of their natural position and provide the right amount of pressure to keep the jawbone strong.

If you are missing multiple teeth, we offer customized dental appliances like bridges and dentures.
